Description

Our current expansion and refurbishment of a school in Niamey, Niger, has been a huge success so far thanks to our donors and sponsors. Collège Amadou Hampaté Bâ is a hugely beneficial, co-educational school for lower income families.

Niger has the highest fertility rate in the world: 7.25 children per woman. Having the school teach both boys as well as girls is vital in a country that prioritises the boys education over that of girls. Whilst more than 60% of girls are enrolled in primary schools, only 20% continue onto secondary education: the expansion of the school allows for these girls to continue onto higher education in a country where the literacy rate is only 26.6% for women compared to 51.1% for men.

Young women from the college participated in a construction course which involved building formwork and laying concrete for their own school. They received course completion certificates for this and learnt new skills women would not typically be taught.

It is because of the support from our donors that we are able to take on projects such as these, and we hope to be able to continue this work as the need for humanitarian aid grows.
