In 2004, Banksy printed 100,000 of his Di-Faced Tenner bills, replacing an image of Queen Elizabeth II with the late Princess Diana, issued by the “Banksy of England.” Featuring Charles Darwin on the reverse, the bill proclaims: “Trust no one.” Banksy released the bills on crowds at Notting Hill and Reading Festivals, and “spilled” a briefcase of bills at Liverpool Street station. The British Museum acquired a Di-Faced Tenner bill in 2019.
Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stencilling technique.
