Nový Dvůr by Piers Phillips

*Live Auction

Off-white painted square grid on a bare linen canvas. The bare linen surface is protected by clear gesso and the off-white squares are compositionally situated on the bottom half of the canvas. Each impasto square is individually painted. The artwork is framed within a dark walnut frame.

The Abbey of Nový Dvůr is a Trappist monastery situated in the west of Czechia which underwent major renovation in the early 2000s, with the design led by John Pawson. A key aspect of Cistercian architecture is the emphasis on light, simplicity and the withdrawal of ornamentation. The simple and rhythmical application of the squares is a nod to the simple and rhythmical character of a monastic day.

I was inspired to create this piece by reflecting on my interior design career before I became a full-time artist. This was a building I loved and studied as a designer and this is my interpretation of the building as an artist.

Piers Phillips is a British artist working in painting and printmaking. His pieces often combine the use of a limited palette and application of the medium to create prominent forms and composition.

Piers has enjoyed a successful career as an interior designer, which often informs his works. This includes a close focus on the manipulation of form, colour and texture, as well as the ability to translate a visual interpretation of the natural environment into a tangible piece of work. As his interest in art continues to deepen, he has shifted his focus from design to become a full-time practitioner.
